Snowberry Hat

This hat was specifically made to use some lovely handspun yarn I purchased but looks equally well with more standard yarns. It can be fancy enough for little girls and grown women or plain for boys and men depending on the yarn used.

Insert hook in first st, yo, pull through, insert hook in second st, yo, pull through, yo, pull through all loops on hook.

Hat Top
Beg Round With magic circle, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, pull to tighten, pm in last sc. Do not join.
Round 1 Sc in first sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc,* rep from * to * around ending with 2 sc in last sc, move marker up to last sc made (continue moving marker up as you go).
Round 2 *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc,* rep from * to * around.
Round 3 *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc,* rep from * to * around.
Round 4+

Continue with ea round adding one sc to ea rep, i.e., 4 sc, 2 sc in next; 5 sc, 2 sc in next, etc., until the length from the center to the edge is:

  • 0-6m – 2″
  • 6m-1yr – 2.25″
  • 1yr-2yr – 2.5″
  • 3yr-4yr – 2.75″
  • 5yr-Adult – 3″

Next round All sizes, sc for 2 rounds without increasing, join with sl st in first sc.

If you’d like the hat to be a little looser, add a couple more rounds before continuing.

Hat Sides

Round 1 Ch 3, sk next 2 sc, *sc in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 sc,* rep from * to * around, join with sl st to first ch.
Round 2 Sl st in first ch-2 space, ch 3 (beg dc), 2 dc in same space, 3 dc in ea ch-2 sp around, join with sl st to beg dc.
Round 3 Ch 3, dc in next dc an in ea dc aroun, join with sl st to beg dc.
Round 4 Ch 1, sc in same ch as joining, sc in each sc around, do not join.
Rounds 5+ Continue with a sc in ea sc around until hat length from center top measures:

  • Newborn – 6″
  • 3-6m – 3.5″
  • 6m-1yr – 4″
  • 1yr-2yr – 4.5″
  • 3yr-10yr – 5″
  • 11yr-19yr – 5.5″
  • Adult – 6″

For newborn, fasten off and weave in ends, you’re done!

Dec Round 1 Fold hat in half and mark sides. Fold in half the other way and mark centers. Continue with sc in ea sc to marked st, *sc2tog, sc to next marked st,* rep from * to * around.
Rounds 2-3 Sc in ea sc around, moving markers down.
Round 4 Sc in ea sc until you get halfway to the first marker, sc2tog, sc in ea sc going past the first marker and halfway to the second marker, sc2tog, sc in ea sc until you are halfway between second and third marker, sc2tog, sc in ea sc until you are halfway between the third and fourth marker, sc2tog, sc in ea sc to fourth marker. Remove all but the last marker.
Rounds 5+ Sc in ea sc around until the hat length from the crown measures:

  • 3-6m – 6.5-7″
  • 6m-1yr – 7.5″
  • 1yr-2yr – 8″
  • 3yr-10yr – 8.5″
  • 11yr-19yr – 9-10″
  • Adult Female – 11″
  • Adult Male – 11-11.5″

Fasten off.

Finishing …

Weave in ends.
